Digital health initiatives, including telehealth, are becoming increasingly important for improving access to health services. The potential benefits to patient health and outcomes are many and varied, and include greater access and equity of care, reduced travel and costs, less time waiting to see a provider, faster diagnosis and access to treatment, and improved continuity and quality of care. Yet investment and implementation of telehealth services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Communities has been relatively limited. Launched in August 2023, the Care on Country Pilot involved design and delivery of a culturally safe model of specialist telehealth care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and has been delivered in three regional locations in Victoria. As part of its commitment to learning and accountability, VACCHO commissioned Day Four Projects to conduct an independent evaluation of the cultural appropriateness and effectiveness of the Care on Country pilot, the sustainability of the pilot's design, and to assess the outcomes delivered by the initiative.
